I tried the beta, granted I've not done much yet, but so far it doesn't seem all that impressive. It might have just been the lag and what not putting me off last night, but I was expecting so much more. I kinda feel sorry for all these upstart MMOs. Blizz has really set the bar very high, we might not realize it since most of us have been playing since vanilla but the game is very very polished.

anyone else playing?? Mickie was downloading last i checked...

ill try more today/night.. and report back.

Yeah I am giving it a try...so far not too bad. The ground combat is nothing to talk about and needs spiffed up. But I like the space combat. I just want to get my paws on a bigger ship!!

But that would make him Ambassador Jean Luc Picard. Not Captain Jean Luc Picard :(

So what exactly do you do in the game? Are you just like a random officer that gets assigned to a random ship or can you choose your assignment or does it take place all in one location?

Misao. You start by creating a character that will be You..the captain of your ship. You gain or buy bridge officers to do things on your ship. If you get a science officer they can take down an enemy ship's shields for a sec so you can sneak a torpedo into them. Engineers can repair shields....so on and so forth. They also have skills for away missions. Away missions have you and your bridge officers(pets) solving issues on the ground.
Ground missions are ok...not great. But lets be honest...space combat is where you want to be.

Your ship...you get to name her and you can play around with her looks. As you gain skills and money, you can upgrade her weapons or trade her in for a better ship. The space combat is actually amazingly fun.

Please note that this game takes place in the 25th century and is considered official Paramount canon for the StarTrek universe. Romulus was destroyed as detailed in the new Trek Movie....but the events in that movie are in a different universe. This is very much a Next Generation fan's dream game.

So everyone has their own ship? Can you go to like space stations (DS9) and do stuff? Land on planets (Earth, Cardassia, etc). How fast are ships (like does the technology exist to go to all 4 quadrants?

in the beta you couldn't go everywhere. because you had a level cap, but yes everyone has their own ship and from what i saw you could dock at space stations and beam down to planets. not sure if there will be any actual landing or shuttle craft. I also tried to fly down to earth when i was at starfleet command in orbit and couldn't.

What happens if your ship blows up? Can you suicide into other ships (aka Jem'Hadar style)? I'm guessing not since that could be huge potential griefing. When I first saw the game I thought it took place during the original series...which I have no interest in. It does look intriguing. It also looks like there's an open beta starting tomorrow! :O (only until February 1st tho) I'll probably wait till there's a trial membership if I can't play during the open beta.

Edit: No I misread it. Its already over. Jan 29th-Feb 1st is there "headstart" thing. Yeah, I'm waiting for a trial membership.

When ur ship blows up u wait to respawn at the respawn zone, basically it really. As for suicide, i did not find any kind of self destruct button, but when u die ur star-ship does really blow up, and if another is too close it will take damage, maybe if their shields are down and are pretty weak, might kill him.

The level cap was removed around a few days before the beta ended itself, during the Klingon invasion the day the beta was closing I saw a few exploration and even 1 battle cruise, was pretty epic. the invasion was extremely pathetic though, there are no mass instance zoning in that u can do, and they didn't give Klingon better ships so they pretty much got spawn camped until the Borg showed up, which could not get killed anyway, non stop respawning.

Honestly they should of pushed back the release date and extended the open beta, there were so many bugs and BS it wasn't funny. Half the missions didn't work, I completed a mission about 3 or 4 times before I said F it and dropped the quest. No matter how many patches came out, every time i tried to log on, i continued to get a "disconnected from account server" over and over again, I almost wanted to punch my screen. Good 5-15min go by before u would get in, the Devs would never respond to tickets, kinda pointless to have a bunch of people testing when u don't even try to work out the problems people are having. And

Dispute these problems, some good things did come out of it. The star ship missions (that worked) were not really that repetitive, which is a good thing. The fleet actions were very fun (Basically a instanced mass pve fight, after about 6min of waiting, a long mission would start and their was a good 10-30people helping out, completing it and getting the top 5 or 6 scores will reward u with a pretty good item of some kind, as well as the quest itself if u picked it up.). Graphics were very good. and the ships and customizing them were def fun.

Hopefully they address all the problems before release, but I doubt they will get to them all.

I don't know, I went in with rather low expectations, and have been pleasantly surprised. Oh sure it has problems and stuff, but its not terrible.

Starting out, ship based combat plays like a Star Trek Fleet Command game, but starts to change as you get more abilities and special powers. It seems to be pretty well done, and gets to be quite complicated later on, even if it is overly simple at the start. Ground combat is less polished. Overall it feels to me much like City of Heroes with a Star Trek skin, but its still not that bad once you actually start to pick up some abilities. The interface for controlling your ground team is clunky, but they generally do fine with letting the AI do whatever.

High Points :
Looks great and very Star Treky
Space combat is fun
Huge numbers of rabid trekkies (may be bad, depending)
Runs in Linux!

Low points :
limited skill points shared between ground and space
no penalty at all for dieing (oh noes! I had to stop shooting things for a whole 15s!)
the server is down... again (they actually have been improving here pretty quickly)
not much non-combat content, least not worth doing

So they you have my review, its pretty ok-ish, if you get the urge to play, let me know and I'd be happy to fly around with you, fight the space bad guys and stuff. The grouping mechanics are even fairly interesting if you can get a group that isn't all "charge! every noob for himself! pew pew!"

oh, and yes, there is an ability called abandon ship that well let you blow up your ship, and ramming speed, if you get the urge... both are pretty high level abilities though, a good high yeild photon torpedo is probably a better option...

The only problem I have with this game is who made it. I'm still upset over Perpetual and their whole treatment of this game and Gods and Heroes (a beta I played- but it was never released). I'm still playing Aion atm and enjoying that quite a bit.

Perpetual didn't make Star Trek Online, Cryptic, makers of City of Heroes/Villains and Champions Online, did. Perpetual was making one, but went bankrupt and lost the license. Only thing that transferred was some of the art resources. The game engine and design is all Cryptic. Of course Cryptic is now owned by Atari, which brings a whole new can of hate worms though...
